Is there an Android APP?

Post by Steve Shank »

It is important for a client of mine to sync his new Android phone (version 16) to his computer using EPIM. I've got a new tablet on the way, which is using Android 15, and I expected to be able to sync with EPIM. However, the Google Play Store won't allow my client to download EPIM because "It is made for an earlier version of Android".

Three questions.
1. Has EPIM given up on Android entirely?
2. Is EPIM going to fix this?
3. If I download EPIM with a device using an earlier version of Android, can I sideload it into the phone/tablet? Will it work despite not meeting Google Play store requirements?

Hello Steve Shank,

you can download EPIM for Android here:

https://www.epim.com/android

However, there will probably be no new version of EPIM for Android, as requests for a new version have not been answered for years.

You can also find more information on the topic in the following articles:

So, it appears they are abandoning the Android development, but is that really a problem? Currently, we can sideload the app. For a longer-term simple solution, we can sync to Google Calendar, tasks, and contacts and then use ANY of many Android apps to read them. I use FairEmail for my Android email. It does mean that there won't be a SIMPLE local sync option, but I'm not sure it is a bad decision. Am I missing something. They should be clear though, or make a decision, about whether they will support Android or make some suggestions.

If you’re looking for a mobile version, you will most likely have to use Google on the phone and ‘skin’ the desktop version with EPIM. Unlike the GMail and Outlook desktop apps, EPIM will allow you to add non-Google/Outlook accounts as IMAP. That is a definite desktop advantage.

Google can provide you a usable security level but it takes about an hour to review and configure your Google Account to do that. Tedious and not particularly self-explanatory, but doable and more than enough security/privacy for non-state use.

Lastly, EPIM was bought by a US company in March 2025. With a little research you will discover that the purchasing company brings a lot of computer programming experience as evidenced by the other companies owned by the purchasing company. I suspect EPIM will evolve as an enterprise/desktop software, which is not a problem and still keeps it a preferred PIM.

If that is true, it wouldn't be the first company to do something like that. Microsoft has a history of buying small software companies to gain their technologies.

If EPIM does not disappear from the market, it will become an online version, which is also indicated by explanations of the company change.

But we will only know when the time comes, since previous representations on the future of EPIM were not meaningful.

First off, I want it to be known that with the comments I will make in this reply, I have no connection or interests with the company that is now behind EPIM.

Second, there are about 14,000 indicated users of this forum, so if a forum user does post, they should consider that a lot of fellow users will see, and judge them, for the content of their posts. Therefore, be careful, and thoughtful, about what one posts. Everyone has an opinion, but we must be civil about those opinions - this is the Internet, and the Internet never forgets about unhelp statements!

For example of recent replies that are problematic, in my opinion:
"If EPIM does not disappear from the market, it will become an online version, which is also indicated by explanations of the company change.
But we will only know when the time comes, since previous representations on the future of EPIM were not meaningful."
This is just a speculation, I see no direct statement from the developers about any of this. How is this statement helpful to improving EPIM or to the rest of the user community?
"Ging to a we only version and also leave Android hanging out to Dry would be a very, very stupide desicion and the end of epim."
Please review one's spelling before posting. Calling something "stupid" is just not acceptable language - say it's "wrong", but then, explain why it is and why it would be the end of EPIM. If one can't do any of the following, just don't post!

Thank you for reading, and to the EPIM developers, keep up the good work!

ecsaltz,

Despite the crude language used, I agree with what edwin2025 wrote. The only thing that EPIM does that no other PIM does is sync directly to other platforms without using "the cloud" in the process.

If they abandon that, I personally would have no reason to continue using EPIM.

The lack of updates or even information about their android version leaves me a bit nervous about my future use of EPIM and has forced me into exploring alternatives.

Exactly, these and similar reports have been around for years now. Unfortunately, in no form has anything happened in the last "three" years.

I’m sorry, but that’s not confidence-raising and seems rather concept-free?

I would say that the best compliment a software product can receive is passion by its users. EPIM has definitely achieved that. Well done.

The world has changed. The mobile market is rapidly including wearables with watches and glasses. Whether it is desirable or not, the majority of the mobile market is not seeking the security, ie. isolation, so often cited here as EPIM’s main attraction. There is no sustainable market incentive to create an independent mobile version of EPIM that would compete with existing mobile systems. The core features of EPIM already integrate (piggy-back) on to other mobile systems without a mobile version.

That said, EPIM as a desktop product can easily find a sustainable niche market. It has important enterprise features that Microsoft, Google, and Apple ignore.

Points well taken. Over the years I have also looked at alternatives, some that have particular strengths over EPIM, but I always found "deal breakers" in them that brought me back to EPIM. One in particular is the lack of direct synching between the desktop and my cell phone (Android in my case) that EPIM offers. I am luckier than most others in that for my purposes with EPIM, I need the more advanced features in the desktop and less so in the Android version. But it's what the majority of what users need to be fulfilled with the Android version that will keep EPIM in business in the future, not mine. That there is currently active support, and development, of the desktop version is a big plus for me to continue with EPIM. However, if the Android version is abandoned entirely...I just don't want to think about that.

ecsaltz, I'm in the same position as you. I sync to my Android phone for tasks and appointments, but that's it. EPIM desktop is my workhorse.

I reread admin's response to this conversation and see nothing in their statement about abandoning AEPIM. In particular, "AEPIM is still on our radar and we're actively considering what the best next steps could be. We're monitoring your feedback and changes in the Android ecosystem and this will help us decide how to move forward."

ecsaltz has a good reminder for us all, "Be careful, and thoughtful, about what one posts." The more specific and constructive we can be about our desires for AEPIM, I think we can help move it in the direction we want.
